Most Beautiful Waterfalls in Sri Lanka

The country is home to more than 100 waterfalls and rivers which at the end of the day stops at the Indian Ocean. Waterfalls are mostly located in the Hill Country. Some of the waterfalls are man-made but still doesn't stop short of being breath-takingly beautiful. Unknown waterfalls are still present, those that weren't officially discovered. Most of the waterfalls are very difficult to find because of the dense forests and are sometimes totally inaccessible. Only a handfull of waterfalls are used to bathe in, whereas the others are too dangerous to do so.


Bambarakanda Waterfalls

The tallest waterfall yet in Sri Lanka which boasts a height of 789 feet. Located in a dense forest around Bandarawela which is very difficult to get through but still is a well worth journey. Still if you are unable to make the special trip to this giant waterfall you can catch a glimse of it on the way to Haputale.


Diyaluma Waterfalls

This majestic waterfall is 559 ft high and is located around the Koslanda-wellawaya road, where the Poonagala Oya is situated. Because of it appearance and location most people believe that it is the tallest water fall.


Bopath Ella

Bopath Ella

Located in a village known to many as Devipahala, close to Rathnapura. This is one of the dangerous waterfalls to swim in, since there have been many deaths of people to have tried to do so. The name is derived from the fact that the waterfall is shaped like a Bo tree.


Devon Waterfall

Devon Waterfall

Also famously known as Sri Lanka's 'veil of the vale '. This cascading waterfall contitutes of 3 falls and is approximatley 318 ft high. Named after a coffee planter named Devon. It is easily spotted along the Talawakele – Navalapitiya Road. It is a glorious waterfall. Despite its gigantic appearance the waterfall is itself very graceful and serene that it can relax any mind from turmoil. However, this beauty is endangered by the Kotmale Power Plant.


Ravana Falls

Named after the epic of Ramayana. The cave behind the waterfall is one of the places that Ravana hid Princess Sita after abducting her from India. Although it is comparatively shorter than most waterfalls, it has a wide flow of water and is quite beautiful to look at.


Dunhinda Waterfalls

Situated 2 km off the main road that leads to Taldena. One of the easily accessible waterfalls and also the famous because of its misty-like spray of water that falls down along the stones. One of the most breath-taking waterfalls in which visitors can have a dip in.


Bakers Waterfall

Another waterfall located at Hoton Plains and is also one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the country. It is a cascading water fall with not one but several falls. However, it is a very dangerous waterfall to bath in. It is about 20 metres high and is named after a well known explorer in the name of Sir Samuel Baker. The fall originates from a tank called Belihul Oya. The scenary surrounding it will definitely take your breath-away.


Hunnas Waterfall

It is a man made waterfall located very close to Kandy. It is about 60 m in height and starts from an artificial man-made lake.


St Claire Waterfall

St Claire Waterfall

Known as one of the widest waterfalls in Sri Lanka, located in Talawakele. It is a cascading waterfall with two falls with its name derived from a nearby tea estate. The water is said to be about 80 m in height making it the 20th highest waterfall in Sri Lanka. St. Claire waterfall is so beautiful that most people call it the little Niagara. Most people find it easy to visit this waterfall on the way to Nuwara Eliya.


Ramboda Falls

The 11th highest waterfall in Sri Lanka, like every other waterfall it is located in the hill country. It is ideal for a family vacation, surrounding it are a lot of holiday resorts that cater to your every need. It is located in Pussellawa. This waterfall is about 109m high and the waterfall has two main drops which tend to confuse people when they see it and most of the time the upper waterfall is not visited because most of the people are not aware of the fact that there are two drops in the fall.
